New reports on Rates of Incarceration Nationwide and Rates of Recidivism in Massachusetts.


One in 100: Behind Bars in America 2008 is a much cited report on the increasing rate of incarceration in the United States, which has reached the rate that one in one hundred adults. This report was produced by the Pew Center on the States.

Recidivism in Massachusetts Prisons: A Closer Look, was produced by the Urban Institute under a contract with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections. The report finds that Massachusetts has a 39% recidivism rate over 3 years, which compares favorably to national averages of close to 66%, and is significant improvement over the Massachusetts rate in 1995 of 45%. But there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Reincarcerated: The Experiences of Men Returning to Mass. Prisons, is the second of two reports done by the Urban Institute under contract with the Massachusetts Department of Correction. This report includes data collected by interviewing 178 prisoners who reoffended, in an attempt to determine what factors lead to their reoffending.
