Public Policy Internship

The Criminal Justice Policy Coalition, a non-profit dedicated to rational and effective criminal justice policy, seeks an intern to assist with all aspects of the organization. Housed within the offices of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, the CJPC lobbies at the State House, presents monthly speakers on cutting edge criminal justice topics, presents conferences, participates in public dialogue (through mass media) on criminal justice issues, and otherwise serves as a resource and voice to counter a blind "put 'em all in jail and throw away the key" mentality.

The Coalition is in the process of expanding its steering committee and entering the next stage of its existence. Component needs of the organization are addressed by committees dealing with Public Policy, Programming, Membership, and Fundraising. The intern will assist in the administration and organization of these committees, and carrying out the action plans as well.

The intern(s) will be working with Executive Director Stephen Saloom, the sole employee. Stephen is a member of the Massachusetts Bar and has lobbied on behalf of non-profit organizations for the past six years. He is also a former Cooperative Education Coordinator and Career Services Advisor, and a veteran of many internships himself. As such, he is interested in making this experience as worthwhile as possible for the intern while also receiving desperately needed assistance with various tasks.

Qualifications: A willingness to learn, a willingness to work independently, interpersonal skills. Also helpful is a sharp mind, a sense of humor, and the ability to maintain a website.

Any time commitment and schedule will be considered.

If you have any questions about the internship, please send them to [email protected].

If you would like to be considered for the internship, please send or fax (617.451.0009) your resume to Stephen Saloom at the CJPC. He will interview until there is enough help to cover the various needs.

Committee members

The CJPC has a very small staff, but very large goals. To help achieve these goals, member participation is crucial. In order to most efficiently and effectively address our component concerns, we have committees devoted to event programming, membership, fundraising, and public policy.

If you have something to contribute in any of these areas, please contact us. We’ll gladly answer any questions you have, and would love to have your participation and assistance.

Time Commitment: 2+ hours per month (it's up to you)

Media Outreach and Speaker's Series Organizer

Before there can be meaningful, positive change in criminal justice policy, lawmakers need to perceive that the public will understand the benefit of these changes. Therefore, one current focus of the CJPC is to get the nuances, details, and reality of criminal justice policy out to the public, primarily through the mass media and possibly a speaker’s series or pool.

The CJPC could use the help of any media-savvy or media–interested persons who would like to assist our efforts in this regard.

Time Commitment: Flexible

Other volunteer opportunities:

Books to prisoners

Since 1979 Books to Prisoners has provided free books to inmates all across the United States. Check out their website and find out how you can help to support this wonderful program.

The Kids' Corner at MCI-CONCORD

The Kids' Corner at MCI-Concord is a play and educational area in the main visiting room at the Concord prison.  It was started in Dec. 1986 at the
direction of the Superintendent and is presently under the supervision of the Catholic chaplain. The Kids' Corner is a 15' by 15' space in one corner of the visiting area. It's carpeted and contains a large play cupboard made by the inmates. Study toys, games, and puzzles are provided for different age groups.

The program is staffed entirely by volunteers from all kinds of backgrounds. The administration provides an orientation session and experienced volunteers are present to help new Kids' Corner volunteers. The Kids' Corner needs more volunteers to be able to be open during all afternoon and evening visiting hours.  If you would like more information about this, please contact Nancy Brown, P.O. Box 288, Harvard, MA  01451, (508)456-8489.

Time Commitment: Afternoon and evening visiting hours at Kids' Corner.
