Bail Fund
History
Background on the problem
Throughout Massachusetts, many poor men and women remain in jail, charged with misdemeanors and non-violent crimes all because they cannot afford their bail – even when it is as low as $100 and $500. It has been shown over time that people who are held during the pretrial period have much worse outcomes for their cases then those who get out on bail. The Massachusetts Bail Fund helps low income and poor residents to meet bail and fight their cases from the outside. The Bail Fund also works to address the inequities in the bail system and help bail fund recipients to connect with community services.
Additionally the Bail Fund:
- Research into the inequities of the bail system
- Track data on case outcomes for those who post bail versus those who do not
- Advocate for bail system reforms
- Engage in community education and awareness building
With your support, the Bail Fund will be fully operational by February 2011
